Wootton Community Network
"People Helping People"
The community network is a volunteer organization.
History
Established in March 1999, after a series of public meetings, the Wootton Community
Network was formed to encourage community spirit, sustainable development and local
employment.
Aims
- to see the local area prosper once more, with improvements to existing services and the creation of employment opportunities in an environment of community not isolation.
- to enhance the lives of people living within the local community.
- to serve as an example to other small isolated communities.
- to develop a sense of pride within the community.
Community Resource Centre - opened July 2004.
- It was constructed entirely with volunteer labour over a period of four years.
- This vital local facility houses the Brush Turkey Cafe and is the administration centre for the Wootton Community Network.
- It provides a focal point for this small community, a meeting place for locals and a market for local produce and products attracting visitors from both the region and the highway.
Adjoining Wootton Hall
Linked to the Community Hall, we provide a unique venue offering on site catering for conferences and workshops. The community hall has seating for 50 people offering catering via the Brush Turkey
Cafe.
Monthly Dinners & Gatherings
Throughout the year, Monthly Community Dinners are held at the cafe
(last Saturday of the month) as well as movie and music nights.
Publications
A bi-monthly newsletter, the Wootton Valley News, is a free distribution, detailing local events, information, products and businesses. The print run is now at 500.
Future Goals
- To become an attractive meeting place for locals, to serve their social needs and thus reducing isolation.
- For the cafe/centre to become a focal point along Wootton Way and combine with other local attractions in the area. eg National Park, Winery, B&B's.
- To make the cafe self sustaining.
- To attract visitors to the cafe information centre, which will in turn bring money into the area.
- To attract people to the area who will share in the future vision of the area.
- To promote and protect this areas natural beauty through eco-friendly tourism and visitor accommodation.
- To increase local job opportunities. eg Training in the cafe leading to paid work.
- To provide infrastructure and support with business administration and also a market place.
- To help make businesses easier to establish and thus more sustainable.
